The Truth about Cosmetic Surgery Cosmetic surgery has become one of the most popular trends in America today. Whether you are reading a magazine, watching the news, or a television program, you are likely to see something about cosmetic surgery. Within the past year, there have been several television programs dedicated to people â€Å"bettering† themselves through body augmenting surgeries. Millions of people undergo risky surgery every year simply to improve or enhance a feature or body part. While the results may seem foolproof and glamorous, it is actually a very risky procedure. With the airing of shows such as â€Å"Extreme Makeover†, MTV’s â€Å"I Want a Famous Face†, and Fox’s show â€Å"The Swan†, cosmetic surgery has become a normal part†¦show more content†¦While many cosmetic surgery procedures have very few risks, obviously no surgical procedure is completely risk free. These risks vary according to the type of procedure being performed, and can range from scarring, to infection and other health problems, to the worst case scenario, death (Cosmetic). To put it simply, in electing to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure, you may be taking unnecessary risks with your health. It is important to research the plastic surgery procedure you are considering in order to properly weigh the risks against the results. This information is easily available to the public. Rhinoplasty, the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery, involves the reshaping of the nose. The procedure usually takes around 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient facility. The side effects include swelling, bruising around the eyes, headaches, and bleeding. The possible risks are infection, breathing problems, and the most common is small burst blood vessels that result in permanent red spots. Patients sometimes must undergo additional surgeries as a result. The next common procedure is liposuction, or the removal of fat deposits with a tube and vacuum device.
